You Dont Know Zach: Deadly Premonition

RPS writes: The weird, wooden and wonderful world of Deadly Premonition is just around the next curve in the road. The bizarre survival horror game may be on Steam as early as November 1st. If you havent played the game in its previous console incarnations, Id suggest that you avoid reading or watching too much about it. There are reasons that people, myself included, hold the game in such high regard, but there are also plenty of good reasons to dismiss it, including an overlong opening sequence and miserable controls. Theres a trailer below, my favourite one for the game, but its both spoiler-filled and not. Out of context (and even in it), some of the scenes make no sense, but I reckon its better not to know what moods are involved at all. Not long to wait.

Tin Salamunic: Goichi Suda is to the gaming industry what Takashi Miike is to Japanese cinema, a visionary, a lunatic, a genius, a schizoid, and a legend. Whatever you want to call him, his games have an unparalleled magnetism and aesthetic charm despite being absurd and oftentimes tasteless. His work may not always be comprehensible, but he manages to walk a fine line between artistry and obnoxiousness. Killer is Dead is tricky because it dangerously tilts towards the latter. Suda always had a knack for composing disjointed narratives, but they worked because good humor, strong characters, and solid gameplay cemented the anarchic bits. Unfortunately, Killer is Dead crosses that delicate line and inches closer to intolerance and bad taste. I love Killer is Deadand I hate it. I havent felt so divided about a game since SWERYs Deadly Premonition. At least Deadly Premonition had a consistent, albeit bizarre, tone. Killer is Dead juggles between remarkable highs and devastating lows....

Theres a particular experience in gaming that can be had only by those with a high tolerance for sloppy game design in order to embrace a bizarre, surreal atmosphere as conceived by Japanese game developers. Most recently, Swery65, was the poster boy for this trend with Deadly Premonition garnering praise and hate alike, but before Swery65, there was Suda51. And hes back with Killer Is Dead. This game is a return to form, for the developer, which may be a good thing or a horrible thing depending on how long youve been a fan of his work.
